In her role as Government Relations Associate, she monitors state and local legislative hearings, meetings, and floor sessions, and arranges meetings with members of the Maryland General Assembly.

A recent graduate from the University of Maryland, College Park with a B.A. in Public Policy, Valerie Skvirsky joined the HJM team in November 2021 as a Government Relations Associate. Before joining HJM, Valerie was a policy research intern for the United States Department of Defense under SAPRO (Sexual Assault Prevention Response Office) where she researched and gathered information related to prevention and response tactics across sexual assault and other forms of violence to improve SAPRO policies and procedures. With that research, Valerie (with her team) successfully drafted a “Violence Prevention Practice and Professional Development” issuance to support the development of DoD policy guidance to establish consistency in workforce/leadership development across programs that address abuse and harm of Service members and DoD civilians.
During that time, Valerie was also a campaign intern with MaryPIRG, the Maryland chapter of Student PIRG’s where she coordinated events for the MaryPIRG Student Climate Action Campaign to promote the passing of statewide legislation to reach carbon neutrality on all Maryland public campuses.
Fluent in Russian, Valerie is also a Russian Medical Interpreter, helping non-English speakers be able to effectively communicate with doctors and medical professionals.
